Valentina, abandoned house and E-TTL

I usually trigger my off camera flashes with Cactus V4 radio transmitter but, since I start reading the last two books of Joe McNally (“Sketching light” and “The hot shoe diaries“), the idea of E-TTL radio system tease me often.

So the decision to try a photo session without RTX but only with the Canon 550 Ex on camera set to no fire but only to be commander for the Canon 430 Ex placed on stand through the 24″ Lastolite Eazybox.

1/100 s @ F/4 ISO 400 – Flash -2 EV

The location is an old abandoned house for the last 40 years: good atmosphere, good light filtering through the windows; I want a soft flash light for hug my friend and super-supermodel Valentina. ;-)

Camera set to manual mode, 400 ISO and a -2 EV compensation of the background; I started with no flash compensation and the result was too bright, probably because of the strip light on the background. So I underexposed the flash by minus to -1 EV directly from the commander and ….yes! It rocks me! A little dodge in postproduction but the overall scene leave me happy. Let the E-TTL to judge the right quantity of light for me is a little uncomfortable but it’s also exciting to set the compensation or power ratio from the camera!

As I suspected, the IR signal is more weakly than you can imagine and if the sensor of slave flash is directed to the softbox, the flash doesn’t fire. Also with the sensor directed outside the box isn’t sure that the signal is correctly received, slave’ sensor toward master’ sensor is the better condition but not always easy to reach.

In the next shot, Valentina sits down on the stair and Matteo, my…or her, I don’t ever really know… assistent is the VAS (Voice Activate Stand) of the situation: I want the soft box boomed over Valentina’s head. The sensor is in a difficult position and not always the signal is clear but in the end this is the right shot.

1/10 s @ F/2,8 ISO 400 – No flash compensation

The last shot to share is this horizontal taken under the roof of the house, a very bad situation for IR signal: I shoot the model through a window in the wall and I placed the softbox behind the right column, fortunatly the signal reach is way and the key light was ok but the back and shoulders of Valentina were black. So the decision to put a second flash behind the left column, set to -1 EV to have a little kick light on the left side of the frame but in this case there was no position able to receive the IR signal. And that’s the story and the shot:

In the end: I’m frightened of infrared signal and TTL flash system basically because I don’t know really know how it works and I’m not so smart with it. Work with radio triggers leave me the safety of knowing that each flash is set to a power level that I set by myself based on my experience. On the other hand I have to admit that once you keep confidence with the IR TTL system about the right compensation you work faster and you can stay focused on model and pose. So the next step will be two light set up and an experimentation on one or two groups. Have a good light and see you soon!

What I’m looking at these lights hidden eye asleep?

A breath, a tendency towards experimentation that I find with every cut of shadow, light and dark frame, the color saturation of a uniform exposure?

Something stirred in me and still “photothinks” that settle down in the stomach trying to return to the surface, out of the loop of everyday life to evolve over the shot, another, again.

Re-examine shots dictated by instinct and I become aware of their similarity with the images of the origins, contemporary to a mature awareness of the reason that cutting brings light to enhance the texture so well or the sun at 45 ° from the center of this landscape, or even to analyze in a glance the spread nice and soft. They are images so far conceptually from my recent portraits and totally devoid of flash, but explain with such clarity as to why and against what kind of halftone hard.

_MG_0278_ed_web

I can not explain but I swear that in my head is totally clear.

This abstraction, chance that this shooting was in itself a reason, systematic research that has as its ultimate goal the application on projects still in progress.

But everything is static! Accurate! Defined, locked, respected, filtered and free of shake! No, no, no certain rules must be understood and not just blindly follow! I absolutely have to disrupt, dismantle, reassemble! And stop point! End of transmission to reread them soon!

Skylight Panel DIY

The last week I made the prototype version 1.0 of a light diffuser that I want to test since a long time: a 110x80cm skylight panel. The Lastolite Skylight Panel is not so cheap and so the decision to make one by myself.

DoItYourself style: with 6 meters of polymer tubes RIG of 25 mm diameter, glue and a shower courtain!!

A little work for cutting and snapping the different parts and here you are a translucent white panel, or almost white, because I noticed after being open that the courtain is designed with little fishes and shells! The test phase was supported by Matteo as assistent and the model Valentina.

The panel called “Skycervo 1.0” works well as a reflector but better as a diffuser: all the shot you can see in this post are made with two canon 430 ex, via Cactus V4, through the panel. A little circular Lastolite silver reflector is used to fill in the shadows on the other side of the model.

I was frightened that the fishes and shells would create shadows but in the end results are harmless.

This push myself to a beauty shot with full dark background, I wanted to extract only Valentina from the blacks.

I’m very proud of my DIY “Skycervo” and the next step would be the use of velcro and alloy tubes.

Have a good light and see you soon!!

Dancers in Luino

Finally my new personal project started its life during this week! It was a long time for preparation, making contacts, planning location and time to shoot. With the partecipation of new models and some old good friends “Dancers in Luino” will keep me busy for the next months, it is a middle term project that I hope to complete before December 2011.

More explanations and details about the concept will arrive later, I can tell you that with the help of my fellow photographer Alessio Lo Piccolo probably we will be able to provide some BTS video time to time.

This project has also the aim to push myself to care attenction to the quality of the light, not only the quantity! ;-)

The first shooting session was held with the beautiful ballet dancer Giulia Colao, many thanks for her hentusiasm and patience.

All the work has the common strobist philosophy and taking inspiration from the pictures of Joe McNally and his ability in managing light.
See you soon and have a good light!
