Non capita spesso di trovare delle
location così ricche di angoli differenti l’uno dall’altro, tali da consentire durante la stessa sessione, di cambiare radicalmente contesto spostandosi solo di pochi metri.
È il caso di un gruppo di vecchie fornaci abbandonate in riva al lago: edifici oramai in rovina in cui differenti epoche e materiali costruttivi si mischiano, dal mattone rosso e soffitti a botte alle putrelle in ferro e cemento armato.
Zone di luce si alternano a zone d’ombra e come sapete l’ombra è amica del fotografo. Le fornaci sono state il luogo in cui per un pomeriggio intero si sono svolte le riprese del servizio fotografico che ha visto come protagonista la modella Sciba.
It doesn’t happen everyday to discover a location so rich of different angles. One that offers you the possibility to move a few meters away to change completely the scenario.
Is this the case of an old brick-kiln near the lake: ruined buildings that merge different materials, red brick and barrel vault to iron and ferroconcrete. Zone of light and zone of shadow, this is the place where Sciba’s photo session take place.
La presenza del lago è stata subito sfruttata prima che il sole primaverile interrompesse il suo caldo irraggiamento. Qualche scatto in costume per poi cambiare d’abito ed esplorare le rovine in cerca di una situazione drammatica da enfatizzare con la luce diretta e non schermata.
The lake and the hot spring sum were perfect to start with some swimwear shot, after that Sciba changed dress and we explore the ruins for some dramatic scene. I used a single direct off camera flash.
In entrambi gli scatti ho voluto sfruttare i contrasti decisi rinforzando oppure staccando dallo sfondo il soggetto, grazie ad un unico flash fuori asse comandato via radio. Parabola chiusa a 105 mm e sensibilità impostata a 50 ISO per salvaguardare, per quanto possibile, le batterie del Canon 430 EX occupato a lavorare a piena potenza o al massimo a 1/2.
Both the first and second shot are characterized by strong contrast thanks to a single bare flash off camera. The flash was zoomed to 105 mm and it worked at 1/1 or 1/2 power with a sensibility of 50 ISO.
L’ambiente abbandonato e i muri corrosi mi hanno subito ispirato poichè in piena contrapposizione ai lineamenti fini e simmetrici e alla bellezza di Sciba. In questi scatti eseguiti in ombra aperta, l’utilizzo del flash diretto sarebbe stato controproducente, ho quindi preferito affidarmi alla luce morbida e direzionata del soft box.
The abandoned place and the scraped walls inspired myself because in opposition with the beauty and simmetrical lineaments of Sciba. In these shots I used the soft box instead of a bare flash because of the soft light that I need.
Il bello di avere a disposizione spazi ampi e profondi è proprio la libertà di gestione della luce che ne consegue: senza stressare eccessivamente le batterie dei flash portatili si può uccidere completamente la luce ambiente e ricreare un ambiente controllato a tre punti luce da 1/8 di potenza come se fossimo in studio.
If you have a bigger space, you can easily kill the ambient light without stressing the batteries of your speedlight. In the next shot the result is a three light source set up.
Ma con tutta la libertà di poter recuperare a piacere il contributo della luce naturale in modo da contestualizzare il soggetto.
The cool is that in the same way you can control the contribute of ambient light in ordere to include or exclude the background from the photo.
Con il sole basso all’orizzonte e una temperatura colore calda, abbiamo proseguito a fotografare dove detriti e macchine abbandonate rendevano grunge la scena.
The session continued with a warmer light through rubbles and abondoned cars in a very grunge scene.
L’utilizzo di una gelatina 1/2 CTO ha permesso di stemperare le ombre senza perdere la tonalità calda.
To prevent the miss of the warm tonality I used a 1/2 CTO gel in front of my fill flash.
Concludiamo la sessione con due ritratti a mezzo busto e primo piano, giusto in tempo per lasciare spazio al freddo del tardo pomeriggio.
We end the afternoon with two portrait before the sun goes down.
Vi lascio con la promessa di sfruttare ancora le potenzialità offerte da questa location, magari aggiungendo alla prossima sessione un video del dietro le quinte anche per lasciare spazio a qualche spunto di riflessione sull’utilizzo delle luci.
